Background InformationBromodomain-containing protein 8, also known as Skeletal muscle abundant protein, Skeletal muscle abundant protein 2, Thyroid hormone receptor coactivating protein of 120 kDa, TrCP120, or p120, and encoded by the gene BRD8/SMAP/SMAP2, is a coactivator protein involved in transcriptional activation of not only nuclear receptors but also is a component of the NuA4 histone acetyltransferase (HAT) complex which specifically activates genes via the acetylation of histones H4 and H2A. Also through the interaction with NuA4 the protein also plays a role in DNA repair, oncogene induction, replicative senescence, apoptosis and tumor suppression. Bromodomain-containing protein 8 is localized to the nucleus, and Bromodomain-containing protein 8 is expressed in adipose tissue, brain, heart, kidney, liver, lung, pancreas, placenta and skeletal muscle.
