      Background InformationTumor necrosis factor receptor ligand superfamily member 9 (also known as CD137L, 4-1BBL or 4-1BB ligand) is a ligand for CD137, a member of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor family and is induced by lymphocyte activation (ILA). CD137 can be expressed by activated T cells, but more so on CD8 rather than on CD4 T cells. In addition, CD137 expression is found on dendritic cells, follicular dendritic cells, natural killer cells, granulocytes and cells of blood vessel walls at sites of inflammation. CD137 interacts with TRAF1, TRAF2 and TRAF3, as well as LRR-repeat protein 1/LRR-1. CD137 exhibits costimulatory activity for activated T cells, where the crosslinking of CD137 enhances T cell proliferation, IL-2 secretion survival and cytolytic activity. CD137 may also enhance immune activity towards tumor suppression.
