DescriptionAnti-Calponin-1 (CT) Antibody, rabbit monoclonal, clone EP798Y
Background InformationCalponin is a smooth muscle specific, actin-, tropomyosin- and calmodulin-binding protein thought to be involved in regulation of actomyosin as well as the regulation or modulation of contraction (1). Calponin binds filamentous actin (F-actin) through two distinct sites ABS1 and ABS2, with an affinity in the low micromolar range (2) Immunoreactivity for calponin, along with alpha-smooth muscle actin and smooth muscle myosin heavy chains, confirms the known neoplastic myoepithelial component of adenoid cystic carcinomas and epithelial-myoepithelial carcinomas. The consistently positive staining pattern in adenoid cystic carcinomas may be diagnostically useful in discriminating histologically similar but consistently negative polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinomas (3).

UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: SwissProt: P51911 # Thin filament-associated protein that is implicated in the regulation and modulation of smooth muscle contraction. It is capable of binding to actin, calmodulin, troponin C and tropomyosin. The interaction of calponin with actin inhibits the actomyosin Mg-ATPase activity (By similarity).
SIZE: 297 amino acids; 33170 Da
SUBUNIT: Part of cGMP kinase signaling complex at least composed of ACTA2/alpha-actin, CNN1/calponin H1, PLN/phospholamban, PRKG1 and ITPR1 (By similarity).
TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Smooth muscle, and tissues containing significant amounts of smooth muscle.
SIMILARITY: SwissProt: P51911 ## Belongs to the calponin family. & Contains 3 calponin-like repeats. & Contains 1 CH (calponin-homology) domain.
