      Background InformationGemin7 is a component of the the survival of motor neurons (SMN) complex. The collection of proteins is essential for the biogenesis of small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) complexes in eukaryotic cells. Reduced levels of SMN cause the motor neuron degenerative disease, spinal muscular atrophy. Gemin7 interacts directly with SMN and Gemin6 and mediates association of Gemin6 with the SMN complex.
