Background InformationCD51, a member of the integrin family, is a 140 kD protein expressed on activated T cells, polymorphonuclear granulocytes, blastocysts, and osteoclasts. CD51 forms heterodimers by association with integrins beta1, beta3, beta5 or beta6, these complexes then act as receptors for multiple extracellular matrix proteins (ECM). The alphaV integrins have varied functions in development, stimulation/activation and homeostasis. The primary ligands for CD51 complexes are fibronectin, fibrinogen, vitronectin, thrombspondin, von Willebrand factor, and CD31.

Application NotesFlow Cytometry: Evaluated in flow cytometry using murine 3T3-L1 cells.
      Flow Cytometry (representative lot data):
Staining of murine 3T3-L1 cells with 0.2 µg of anti-Integrin Anti-Integrin αV , clone RMV-7, or with 1 µg of Rat IgG1 isotype control.

Immunoprecipitation: A previous lot was used in immunoprecipitation (Takahashi, K. et al., (1990). J. Immunol. 145:4371.)
Western Blot: A previous lot was used in western blot (Takahashi, K. et al., (1990). J. Immunol. 145:4371.)
Blocking Assay: Adhesion and LAK cell cytotoxicity was shown using a previous lot (Takahashi, K. et al., (1990). J. Immunol. 145:4371.)

      HostRat
SpecificitySpecifically recognizes mouse CD51, also known as integrin alphaV or vitronectin receptor. This antibody has been reported to block binding of CD51 to vitronectin, fibronectin, fibrinogen, and CD31 in some cell types, as well as, blocking LAK cell cytotoxicity.

      Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThe product of this gene belongs to the integrin alpha chain family. Integrins are heterodimeric integral membrane proteins composed of an alpha chain and a beta chain. This gene encodes the integrin alpha 5 chain. Alpha chain 5 undergoes post-translational cleavage in the extracellular domain to yield disulfide-linked light and heavy chains that join with beta 1 to form a fibronectin receptor. In addition to adhesion, integrins are known to participate in cell-surface mediated signalling.

      UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: SwissProt: P08648 # Integrin alpha-5/beta-1 is a receptor for fibronectin and fibrinogen. It recognizes the sequence R-G-D in its ligands. In case of HIV-1 infection, the interaction with extracellular viral Tat protein seems to enhance angiogenesis in Kaposi's sarcoma lesions.
SIZE: 1049 amino acids; 114536 Da
SUBUNIT: Heterodimer of an alpha and a beta subunit. The alpha subunit is composed of an heavy and a light chain linked by a disulfide bond. Alpha-5 associates with beta-1. Interacts with HPS5. Interacts with HIV-1 Tat.
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein.
SIMILARITY: SwissProt: P08648 ## Belongs to the integrin alpha chain family. & Contains 7 FG-GAP repeats.
