      Background InformationNLR family member X1 (NLRX1) belongs to the Nod-like receptor (NLR) family of proteins, a group of proteins characterized by their highly conserved nucleotide binding domain (NBD) and their leucine-rich-repeats (LRR). NLRX1 is the only member of this family localized to mitochondria, where it plays a role in antiviral signaling by blocking virus-induced interaction of RLH-MAVS, serving as a negative regulator of the antiviral responses mediated by MAVS. It also serves to up-regulate NF-Kappa-B and JNK-dependent signaling cascades as its overexpression induces reactive oxygen species (ROS). NLRX1 has been observed in high quantities within the heart, mammary gland, and muscle tissues. It has also been observed at the protein level in various cell lines including; JURKAT, HeLa, HL60, RAJI, THP-1, and 293T.
