      Alternate Names
      • transforming, acidic coiled-coil containing protein 2
Background InformationTACC2, also known as transforming acidic coiled-coil-containing protein 2, belongs to the transforming acidic coiled-coil-containing (TACC) protein family. This group of proteins is defined by its highly conserved coiled-coil domain. This domain is necessary for the assignment of the centrosome-spindle apparatus during cell cycling. There are three proteins belonging to the TACC family; TACC1, TACC2, and TACC3. TACC2 has been reported as playing a necessary role in cultured cell microtubule stabilization. It has also been shown that the binding of TACC2 by T antigen can cause chromosomal instability and mitotic defects (Tei, 2009). Research into the over expression of TACC2 strongly suggests a potential function as a tumor suppressor (Tei, 2009).

      Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThis gene encodes a member of the transforming, acidic coiled-coil (TACC) family of proteins. Members of this family are centrosomal proteins that interact with microtubules and tubulin. TACC proteins are thought to be involved in centrosome/mitotic spindle dynamics and gene regulation. Alternative splicing of this gene results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq].

      UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: Plays a role in the microtubule-dependent coupling of the nucleus and the centrosome. Involved in the processes that regulate centrosome-mediated interkinetic nuclear migration (INM) of neural progenitors. May play a role in organizing centrosomal microtubules (By similarity).

SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Interacts with microtubules. Interacts with YEATS4, GCN5L2 and PCAF By similarity. Interacts with CCDC100/CEP120.

SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm By similarity. Nucleus By similarity. Cytoplasm › cytoskeleton › centrosome (By similarity).

TISSUE SPECIFICTY: Expressed in brain, kidney, lung, thymus and ovary. Not detectable in normal tissues at protein level.

PTM: Phosphorylated; which is required for localization in centrosome (By similarity).

DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Mice develop normally, are fertile, and do not present elevated tumorization rates. Cells deficient in TACC2 divide normally and do not show any change in the frequency of apoptosis induction.

SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Belongs to the TACC family.

      Contains 1 SPAZ (Ser/Pro-rich AZU-1) domain.
Molecular WeightObserved molecular weight, 73 kDa.
Note this protein can be highly modified and several isoforms exist.
