      Background InformationAutophagy is the process by which cells recycle cytoplasm and dispose of excess or defective organelles. This process is suggested to be involved in development, differentiation, growth regulation, and tissue remodeling in multicellular organisms. Autophagy-related protein 7 (ATG7) is an ubiquitin-like modifier-activating enzyme and is essential for multisubstrates such as ATG8-like proteins GABARAP, GABARAPL1, GABARAPL2 or MAP1LC3A. ATG 7 is also involved in ATG12 conjugation to ATG5 and ATG3. In this interaction, an ATG7-ATG3 complex plays a role in the conjugation of ATG12 to ATG5. Recently, ATG7 deficiency has been linked to human breast cancer resistance to anti-cancer therapies.
