      Background InformationAtg16L1 (autophagy-related 16-like 1) is a Crohn’s disease susceptibility gene. Atg16L1 is an essential part of the autophagic mechanism that is thought to regulate the endotoxin-induced inflammatory immune response. Atg16L1, in addition with NOD2, is a part of an autophagy-mediated antibacterial pathway that is altered by mutations linked to Crohn’s disease. Recently, Atg16L1 has been linked to an increase in IL-1beta and IL-6 which may be the mechanism for the increased inflammation in Crohn’s disease.
