      Background InformationGlutamate-cysteine ligase regulatory subunit, also known as GCS light chain or Gamma-ECS regulatory subunit or Gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase regulatory subunit or Glutamate--cysteine ligase modifier subunit, and encoded by the gene name GCLM or GLCLR, is one of two parts of glutamate-cysteine ligase (GCL). GCL is responsible for catalyzing the rate-limiting step in the synthesis of cellular antioxidant glutathione (GSH). With the introduction of oxidative stress, GCLM was modified from its monomeric form to a holoenzyme. GCLM is expressed in skeletal muscle. There is evidence that a functional mutation in GCLM could leave a patient with a predisposition to schizophrenia.
