CN, Diol, and NH2 modified silica plates (TLC and HPTLC)
Free choice of solvent systems for demanding separations and as a pilot technique for HPLC

Modified silica layers are well suited for many separation problems that cannot be adequately solved by unmodified silica. Advantages are:
- Results are less dependent on atmospheric humidity
- Separation of extremely non-polar and highly polar substance using aqueous solvent systems
- No catalytic activity towards non-stable substances that might tend to oxidative degradation
CN, Diol, and NH2 modified silica plates (TLC, HPTLC)
The CN- and Diol-modified silica plates are moderately polar and suited for both normal-phase and reversed-phase systems. The CN-modified plate is based on a silica gel 60 modified with a cyano propyl group, while the Diol-modified plate utilizes a silica surface modified by a vicinal diol alkyl ether. Especially the dual characteristic of the CN plate allows unique two-dimensional separations to be achieved by using the normal-phase mechanism in the first direction followed by reversed-phase mechanism in the second direction.
The amino-modified NH2 plate provides weak basic ion-exchange characteristics with extraordinary selectivity for charged compounds. These unique features enable the separation of charged compounds such as nucleotides, purins, pyrimidines, phenols and sulfonic acids using simple eluent mixtures. For many applications, it offers an alternative to PEI cellulose. In addition, NH2-modified silica plates allow the reagent-free detection of certain compounds (e.g. carbohydrates) by thermochemical fluorescence activation.
Since most substances separated on modified plates are colorless, the majority of Merck Millipore’s modified silica plates contain the blue fluorescent, acid-stable UV indicator F254s. Samples that absorb shortwave UV at 254 nm are detected due to fluorescence quenching.
Modified silica plates provide additional selectivities and significantly broaden thin-layer chromatography applications.
