A zwitterionic detergent with an aromatic core that is useful for solubilizing and stabilizing integral membrane proteins by breaking aggregates. Shown to be compatible with urea (~7 M), and for analysis and characterization of band III, a 100 kDa polytransmembrane protein from red blood cells by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DGE).
