A 24-residue anti-apoptotic peptide that, when expressed intracellularly, offers protection against neuronal apoptosis induced by presenilin and APP (amyloid precursor protein) mutants associated with familial Alzheimer′s disease (AD). Shown to reduce cytochrome c release in vitro by directly binding to Bax (Bcl-2-associated X protein; Kd ~ 2 nM) and preventing its association with isolated mitochondria.
