The Warthin-Starry silver plating method
A significant part of the world’s population is infected with Helicobacter pylori, a gram-negative, rod-shaped, spiral bacterium that is responsible for inflammations and ulcers of the stomach and duodenum. If the existence of Helicobacter pylori can be established, these diseases can be treated with antibiotics.
One important method for detecting Helicobacter pylori is the Warthin-Starry silver plating technique. With this method, the tissue is first pre-treated with an acidic silver nitrate solution. With the help of a developer solution containing hydroquinone, the silver compound is reduced, silver becomes visible through darkening in the corresponding structures, and the bacteria appear black or dark brown against yellow to light brown tissue structures.
Optimized composition for reproducible results
Experience shows that the Warthin-Starry procedure can be critical when conventional equipment is used. This concerns the reproducibility of the results as well as the quality of the silver reaction in the tissue. Merck Millipore’s Warthin-Starry silver plating kit for detection of Helicobacter pylori offers the solution to these technical problems. Thanks to the special composition of the individual kit components, well differentiated preparations achieve a perfect representation of the argenaffin structures with high reproducibility. The protocol included in the packaging describes exactly how to perform the procedure to obtain optimal results.
Ready-to-use staining solutions and kits
The new Warthin-Starry silver plating kit for detection of Helicobacter pylori is part of Merck Millipore’s successful product range of ready-to-use staining solutions and kits for standard staining methods in histology. Merck Millipore offers CE-certified products that save time and effort and deliver brilliant staining results with high reproducibility and batch-to-batch stability. All staining kits are subjected to strict quality controls regarding chemical and physical parameters as well as to thorough application tests. The kits can be used for at least two years, and can mostly be stored at room temperature (please refer to the indications on the label, insert or in the catalogue).
