      DescriptionAnti-ODC1 Antibody, clone CPTC-ODC1-2
      Alternate Names
      • ornithine decarboxylase 1
      • ornithine decarboxylase
Background InformationOrnithine decarboxylase (ODC1) is the first enzyme in polyamine synthesis and is mandatory for normal growth and is increased in many types of cancers. ODC1 has been shown to suppress the fmc1 deletion in yeast and restores healthy respiratory growth. ODC1 may play a role in promoting DNA synthesis in hepatocytes.

      Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThis gene encodes the rate-limiting enzyme of the polyamine biosynthesis pathway which catalyzes ornithine to putrescine. The activity level for the enzyme varies in response to growth-promoting stimuli and exhibits a high turnover rate in comparison to other mammalian proteins. Originally localized to both chromosomes 2 and 7, the gene encoding this enzyme has been determined to be located on 2p25, with a pseudogene located on 7q31-qter. [provided by RefSeq].

      • ODC1
      Purification MethodProtein G
      UniProt Number
      UniProt SummaryCATALYTIC ACTIVITY: L-ornithine = putrescine + CO2.

      COFACTOR: Pyridoxal phosphate.

      ENZYME REGULATION: Inhibited by S-nitrosylation.

PATHWAY: Amine and polyamine biosynthesis; putrescine biosynthesis via L-ornithine pathway; putrescine from L-ornithine: step 1/1.

      SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Homodimer.

INDUCTION: Down-regulated in response to enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection (at protein level).

PTM: S-Nitrosylation inhibits the enzyme. S-Nitrosylated in vitro on 4 cysteine residues.

SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Belongs to the Orn/Lys/Arg decarboxylase class-II family.
Molecular Weight ~51 kDa observed. A band at ~100 kDa may be observed in some lysates and may be the homodimer of this protein.
