Background InformationAcetyl-coenzyme A synthetase, cytoplasmic (EC 6.2.1.1; UniProt Q9NR19; also known as Acetate-CoA ligase, Acetyl-CoA synthetase, AceCS, ACS, Acyl-activating enzyme, Acyl-CoA synthetase short-chain family member 2) is encoded by the ACSS2 (also known as ACAS2) gene (Gene ID 55902) in human. ACS plays a vital role in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells by activating acetate to form acetyl CoA that serves as a source of two carbon metabolite for lipid synthesis and energy producing reactions. It is also reported to play a role in gene expression. In yeast cells it delivers acetyl CoA for histone acetylation. ACS contributes to cancer cell growth under low-oxygen and lipid-depleted conditions and its expression is upregulated under metabolically stress. Silencing ACSS2 gene is shown to reduce the growth of tumor xenografts. Ref.: Starai, VJ., and Escalante-Semerena, JC. (2004). Cell. Mol. Life Sci. 61, 2020 2030. Schug, ZT et al. (2015).
