Background InformationTAF3 is a subunit of TFIID that was initially identified through its interaction with a developmentally regulated transcription factor Bric a brac 1 (bab1), which is implicated in pattern formation and tissue morphogenesis in Drosophila. TFIID is a general or basal transcription factor that regulates initiation by allowing RNA polymerase II to recognize a core promotor. TAF3-TBPL2 complexes are found in myoblasts; however, upon differentiation into myotubes, they are replaced by TRF3-TAF3 complexes. Further research is still required to elucidate the roles and the development of the former to the latter complex.

Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThe highly conserved RNA polymerase II transcription factor TFIID (see TAF1; MIM 313650) comprises the TATA box-binding protein (TBP; MIM 600075) and a set of TBP-associated factors (TAFs), including TAF3. TAFs contribute to promoter recognition and selectivity and act as antiapoptotic factors.
Gene Symbol
  • TAF3

UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: Transcription factor TFIID is one of the general factors required for accurate and regulated initiation by RNA polymerase II. TFIID is a multimeric protein complex that plays a central role in mediating promoter responses to various activators and repressors. Required in complex with TBPL2 for the differentiation of myoblasts into myocytes. The complex replaces TFIID at specific promoters at an early stage in the differentiation process.

SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Belongs to the TFIID complex which is composed of TATA binding protein (TBP) and a number of TBP-associated factors (TAFs). Interacts with TAF10 via the histone fold. Interacts with TAF13, TBP, SAP130 and GCN5L2. Interacts with TBPL2.
