Culture Media to Test
for Streptococcus

Request Information

For the enrichment, isolation and enumeration of Streptococcus bacteria, Merck provides a range of culture media designed for effective food and beverages testing. These media are available in a variety of formulations as dehydrated culture media in the form of granules. Merck’s uniquely granulated culture media are both convenient and safe to use, as the granules are easy soluble and cause significantly less dust than powdered media. Dust reduction minimizes contamination of the work environment and reduces inhalation of hazardous media components that may cause allergic reactions.

Our culture media for streptococci, like all Merck media, meet the highest industry performance standards as described in ISO 11133 and are quality controlled according to the most stringent standards. This guarantees the high quality and batch-to-batch consistency of our products.

Streptococci – An Overview

Streptococci are gram-positive, mostly facultative anaerobic bacteria that belong to the phylum Firmicutes and the lactic acid bacteria group. The genus Streptococcus currently includes more than 50 species. These species are sub-divided on the basis of their hemolytic properties into alpha hemolytic, beta hemolytic and gamma hemolytic streptococci. Alpha hemolytic species oxidize the iron in the hemoglobin molecules of red blood cells, beta hemolytic species cause the complete rupture of red blood cells and gamma hemolytic species cause no hemolysis.

Most of the Streptococcus species are nonpathogenic and form part of the commensal human microbiome of the mouth, intestine, skin and upper respiratory tract. A species of streptococci is actually used for the production of Emmentaler cheese. The pathogenic Streptococcus species are responsible for streptococcal pharyngitis and many cases of pink eye, meningitis, bacterial pneumonia, endocarditis, erysipelas and necrotizing fasciitis. S. pneumonia is a leading cause of bacterial pneumonia and one of the most important pathogens.
