Merck provides solid culture media which are supplemented with β-lactamases (see also ICR Settle Plates and ICR Contact Plates). These enzymes efficiently inactivate a broad spectrum of β-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins, cephalosporins and carbapenems. Alternatively, lyophilized or liquid, highly potent preparations of these β-lactamase enzymes are also available. These Merck products are suitable for sterility and bioburden testing as well as for environmental monitoring.
The β-lactamase products provide high enzymatic activity, with culture media containing 1.000 IU/I cephalosporinase (cephase) and 10.000 UI/I penicillinase (penase).
In manufacturing facilities where antibiotics are produced, β-lactamase enzymes such as penicillinase (penase) and cephalospopinase (Cephase) are contained in the monitoring media to inactivate β-Lactam antibiotics. Produced antibiotics must also be inactivated prior to sterility testing to allow for the detection of potential contaminants which are sensitive to the antibiotic.
