      Background InformationRNA demethylase ALKBH5 is also known as Alkylated DNA repair protein alkB homolog 5 and Alpha-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase alkB homolog 5. ALKBH5 is a dioxygenase that demethylates RNA, specifically N(6)-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA, which affects mRNA processing and export and is needed for spermatogenesis. ALKBH5 has the highest expression in lung, testis, pancreas, spleen and ovary, but is widely expressed across other tissues.
