      Background InformationTrans-acting T-cell-specific transcription factor GATA-3 (UniProt P23771; also known as GATA-binding factor 3) is encoded by the GATA3 (also known as HDR, HDRS) gene (Gene ID 2625) in human. GATA-3 is a zinc finger transcription factor family protein that plays an important role in the differentiation of Th2 T helper cells. GATA-3 mediates the transcription of Th2 cytokine genes, particularly IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13. GATA-3 activates the transcription of IL-5 and IL-13 by directly binding to their promoters, while GATA-3 indirectly regulates IL-4 transcription by its involvement in the remodeling of chromatin structure within IL-4 locus. The expression of GATA-3 itself is regulated by signal transducer and activator of transcription-6 (STAT6).
