Gene Information

human ... METTL13(51603)

General description

The protein named Methyltransferase-like protein 13 and encoded by the gene METTL13/KIAA0859, acts as a methyltransferase that is often up regulated in tumor tissue. Interestingly polymorphisms in the gene for METTL13 have also been associated with post-partum depression. Other members of this family catalyze important methylation reactions including the methylation of 7-methylguanosine in tRNA metabolism. Methyltransferase-like protein 13 is just one of several hundred family members and its expression is associated with many important events during embryonic development, growth and maturation but its actual function is still being discovered. Methyltransferase-like protein 13 is one of many genes that is highly conserved in eukaryotic development from worms to humans, thus its function is likely critical to some aspect of mammalian homeostasis.
