General description

Aldehyde dehydrogenase family 3 member A1 (Aldh3A1) is a member of the aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) superfamily. The ALDH family is a group of NAD(P)(+)-dependent enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of a wide spectrum of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes. ALDHs are involved in the metabolism of corticosteroids, biogenic amines, neurotransmitters, and lipid peroxidation. They are suggested to play a major role in the detoxification of alcohol-derived acetaldehyde. Aldh3A1 is shown to oxidize preferentially aromatic aldehyde substrates, and it may play a role in the oxidation of toxic aldehydes. Aldh3A1 is highly expressed in stomach, esophagus, lung and cornea. It represents between 5 to 50% of the water soluble protein fraction in mammalian corneas and it is implied to protect the cornea from UV-induced oxidative stress.
~48 kDa observed. Uncharacterized bands may appear in some lysate(s).
