General description

Inversin is a tubulin-associated protein, which is highly expressed in the cilia of renal tubules. It contains sixteen ankyrin repeats at the N-terminus and two IQ domains at the C-terminus. The ankyrin repeats facilitate protein-protein interactions, whereas the IQ domains are involved in calmodulin binding. Previous studies have indicated that inversin modulates the Wnt signaling pathway, and interacts with a plethora of intracellular signaling targets, including Disheveled, Frizzled-8, alpha- and beta catenins, NPHP1, and NPHP3. Inversin is localized to mitotic spindle fibers, and plays an important role in renal development and left-right axis determination. Defects in inversin result in nephronophthisis type 2, an autosomal recessive cystic kidney disease.
~165/12 kDa observed. Uniprot describes 3 isoforms at ~11, ~100, and ~118 kDa The calculated molecular weights are 11 and 118 kDa, however Inversin has been shown as a ~12 and ~165 kDa band in western blots (Nurnberger, J., et al. (2004). J Am Soc Nephrol. 15:1700–1710.). Uncharacterized bands may appear at ~45, ~53, and ~55 kDa
