General description
35-45 kDa (Turni, 2002)
The CD24 antigen, which has a molecular weight of 35-45 kDa, is a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored surface molecule. It is a member of a family that also includes HSA and CD52. Cross-linking of CD24 can induce increased intracellular Ca++ in mature B lymphocytes (Turni, 2002).
CD24 is expressed at multiple stages of B cell development, beginning with the bone marrow CD34+ pro-B-cell compartment and continuing through mature surface IgM+/IgD+ B cells. Plasma cells express very low to negligible levels of CD24 (Le Bien, 1995). CD24 is not expressed on the cell surface of normal T cells or monocytes, but is expressed on mature granulocytes (Le Bien, 1995; Fukukawa, 1986). The antigen is also present on a variety of epithelial types (Turni, 2002).

Gemcitabine is the first-line chemotherapeutic agent for advanced adenocarcinoma of the pancreas, despite the high risk of chemoresistance as a major disadvantage. In the past few years, significant advances have been made in the field of pancreatic cancer stem-like cells
