General description

Nucleostemin has been identified as a nucleolar protein that plays a role in the self-renewal mechanism of a variety of stem cells. Analysis of gene expression showed that both undifferentiated ES cells, Neural & Hematopoietic stem cells and a number of cancer cells express Nucleostemin. Expression was not detected following stem cell differentiation into mature cell types. The identification of factors that influence self renewal are important for the development of therapeutic applications of stem cells and also for the development of cancer treatments. Monoclonal antibodies to Human nucleostemin will facilitate the analysis of self-renewal in both stem cells and cancer cells.
