General description
Alpha fetoprotein (AFP) or alternatively known as Alpha-1-fetoprotein or Alpha-fetoglobulin is encoded by the human gene named AFP/HPAFP is an important early fetal blood protein. It is a secreted protein found in the plasma of fetuses older than 4 weeks of age and reaches the highest levels at 12th-16th week of gestation and then drops to trace amounts after birth. It is produced by the fetal liver and yolk sac normally. In normal adults the level is very low, but AFP can be a marker associated with various cancers and in particular with liver cancer and hepatomas. Its function during development is thought to be similar to that of serum albumin binding various ions and fatty acids as well as bilirubin, but while AFP is the most abundant protein found in the human fetus its complete function is still largely unknown. AFP as a biomarker in infants is associated with various diseases, however, because AFP levels change normally over a wide range in the developing fetus accurate aging is essential. High levels of AFP may suggest that the developing baby has a neural tube defect such as spina bifida or anencephaly. High levels of AFP may also suggest defects with the esophagus or a failure of baby’s abdomen to close. Low levels of AFP and abnormal levels of hCG and estriol may indicate that the developing baby has Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), Trisomy 18 (Edwards Syndrome) or another type of chromosome abnormality. EMD-Millipore’s Anti-AFP mouse monoclonal antibody has been tested in western blot on HepG2 and SMMC-7721 cell lysates.
~69 kDa observed. Uncharacterized bands may appear in some lysate(s).

Preparation Note
Stable for 1 year at -20°C from date of receipt.
Handling Recommendations: Upon receipt and prior to removing the cap, centrifuge the vial and gently mix the solution. Aliquot into microcentrifuge tubes and store at -20°C. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles, which may damage IgG and affect product performance.
Note: Variability in freezer temperatures below -20°C may cause glycerol containing solutions to become frozen during storage.
