General description
Acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) are broadly distributed in the nervous system where they contribute to certain sensory processes. In particular, they survey moderate decreases in extracellular pH as a means to regulate acid levels and acid-induced pain. ASICs thereby serve as a popular target for the treatment of acidosis. The acid-sensing ion channel 1 consists of a trimeric protein, where each subunit is composed of two transmembrane spanning helices, a highly organized ectodomain, and an intracellular N-terminus and C-terminus.
~60 kDa observed. Two isoforms at ~60 kDa and ~62 kDa are known to exist.
