General description

Testosterone 17-beta-dehydrogenase 3 (EC 1.1.1.64; UniProt P37058; also known as 17-beta-HSD 3, 17-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 3, Short chain dehydrogenase/reductase family 12C member 2, Testicular 17-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase) is encoded by the HSD17B3 (also known as EDH17B3, SDR12C2) gene (Gene ID 3293) in human. 17 -hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (17 -HSDs) mediate the activation and deactivation of sex steroids involving redox reactions centered about the C17 area of the steroid backbone. 17 -HSD3 catalyzes the final step in the steroidogenesis of the potent androgen testosterone (T) by selectively reducing the C17 ketone of 4-dione, utilizing NADPH as a cofactor, in testis and prostate. Upregulated 17 -HSD3 mRNA level is found in cancerous prostate biopsies when compared to normal tissue, while 17 -HSD3 deficiency caused by HSD17B3 gene mutations results in 46,XY Disorders of Sex Development (46,XY DSD).
~37 kDa observed. 34.52/29.11 kDa (human isoform 1/2) and 34.33 kDa (mouse) calculated. Uncharacterized bands may be observed in some lysate(s).

Immunogen

KLH-conjugated linear peptide corresponding to an internal sequence within the N-terminal half of human HSD17B3.
