Testing for Pseudomonas

Request Information

For cultivation of Pseudomonas, Merck provides selective dehydrated culture media that are perfectly suited for microbiological testing in pharmaceutical and cosmetics manufacturing facilities.

The genus Pseudomonas is part of the family Pseudomonadaceae and contains about 180 species. As gram-negative aerobic gammaproteobacteria, pseudomonads metabolically very diverse and habitate a wide range of niches. Pseudomonas are rod shaped and have one or more flagella used for motility. The catalase test as well as the oxidase test comes up positive for pseudomonads. Production of pyoverdine, a fluorescent yellow-green siderophore, under iron-restricted conditions as well as of other siderophores is also associated with Pseudomonas.

P. aeruginosa, P. oryzihabitans and P. plecoglossicida are some of the infectious species. P. aeruginosa is the second most common cause of infection in hospital patients. Many pseudomonads are able to act as plant pathogens. The most widespread and studied species is P. syringae.

Pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies must make sure that their production environments and products do not contain harmful levels of pathogens such as Pseudomonas.

Ideal Selective Media for Pseudomonas Cultivation

Merck provides highest quality culture media for the enrichment, isolation and enumeration of Pseudomonas. These media are available in various formulations as dehydrated culture media in the form of granules.

Merck’s uniquely granulated culture media meet the highest industry performance standards as described in ISO 11133 and are quality controlled according to stringent standards. This guarantees the excellent consistency and high quality of our products. These media are extremely convenient to use and also safe. The granuled format leads to significantly less dust development than with powdered media. This leads to less inhalation of hazardous media components that may causes allergic reactions. In addition, it minimizes contamination of the work environment.
