ブロモフェノールブルーは、酸性水溶液中でスルホン化ヒドロキシキノンの形で存在します。テトラブロモフェノールスルホンフタレインとしても知られています。ブロモフェノールブルーはpH指示薬であり、色素は濃い青色です。負電荷をやや帯びており、DNAと同じ方向へ移動するため、ユーザーはゲル中を動く分子の進路をモニターできます。移動速度はゲル組成によって異なります。

Application

ブロモフェノールブルーは、DNA、RNA（アガロース）とタンパク質（ポリアクリルアミド）のゲル電気泳動における追跡用色素として使用されます。ウェスタンブロット解析用のタンパク質サンプルの調製で使用されています。ブロモフェノールブルーは、アガロースゲル中では300～500bpのDNAとほぼ同じ速度で移動し、タンパク質用ポリアクリルアミドゲル中ではバッファー先端で移動します。血液脳関門を探索するための生体染色としての利用も知られています。
