Application
5-ヒドロキシ-L-トリプトファンは次の用途で使用されています。
- セロトニン検出を目的として実験用マウスに注入するため。
- 5-ヒドロキシトリプタミン前駆体として使用され、また肺スライスのニュートラルレッド生体染色のために妊娠マウスおよびラット新生仔に注入されています。
- 高速液体クロマトグラフィー（HPLC）分析の標準物質としてクエン酸・酢酸緩衝液に溶解して使用。
Biochem/physiol Actions
セロトニンの直接の前駆体で、L-芳香族アミノ酸デカルボキシラ-ゼの基質です。
セロトニン合成中、脳内でL-トリプトファンの水酸化が生じます。これはセロトニンの産生を制御するステップであり、また代謝物として5-ヒドロキシ-L-トリプトファン（5-HTP）が生じます。したがって、5-HTPが消費されるとセロトニン濃度が上昇し、抑うつ、睡眠不足、重度の頭痛が生じることがあります。
