The BIRMA-1 antibody reacts strongly with all common forms of the A antigen, including A2B. When used at appropriate concentrations it will directly agglutinate most examples of Aₓ. It has the benefit of not agglutinating red cells classified as having the B(A) phenomenon, nor of agglutinating unmodified or enzyme treated B or O red cells.
