      Background InformationThe protein Beclin-2 is encoded by the gene BECN1P1/BECN2 and is involved in two important lysosomal degradation pathways in the brain and other tissues. Beclin-2 acts as a regulator of autophagy and as a regulator of G-protein coupled receptors turnover. Beclin 2, which, like Beclin 1, functions in autophagy and interacts with class III PI3K complex components and Bcl-2. Beclin-2 is expressed in fetal and adult brain as well as other tissues. Beclin-2 is localized in the cytoplasm. Beclin-2 knockout mice have decreased embryonic viability, and heterozygous knockout mice have defective autophagy, increased levels of brain cannabinoid 1 receptor, elevated food intake, and obesity and insulin resistance. Thus because of its many cellular influences research into Beclin-2 regulation and function is ongoing.
