      Background InformationThe protein known as Trop-2, or also known as cell surface glycoprotein Trop-2, Membrane component chromosome 1 surface marker 1 or Pancreatic carcinoma marker protein GA733-1 and encoded by the gene TACSTD2/GA733-1/M1S1/TROP2, is a protein that may function as a growth factor receptor and is expressed primarily in the placenta, lung and epithelial tissues but also found in certain cancers. The protein was first identified as a carcinoma antigen by the monoclonal GA733. It is a plasma membrane bound protein that transduces an intracellular calcium signal after binding unknown ligands. Mutations in Trop2 are associated with a rare eye disease leading to blindness. Trop-2 has also recently been shown to be important in regulating fibroblast motility and lung cell proliferation via the regulation of the ERK kinase pathway as well as several critical components of the cell migration apparatus.
