General description
Called the “master gland” because it controls many other endocrine glands, the pituitary gland secretes several key hormones that play important roles in the regulation of metabolism, growth, and reproduction. Pituitary hormones are responsible for the stimulation of the adrenal gland (ACTH), thyroid gland (TSH), ovaries and testes (FSH, LH), as well as blood pressure and the amount of water excreted by the kidneys. Through its connection with the pituitary gland, the hypothalamus modulates endocrine function by detecting hormone levels.
