General description

Dichloromethane, also known as methylene chloride, is a polar organochlorine compound. It is a colorless, volatile, and high-density liquid that is miscible with many organic solvents. As a result, it is widely used as a solvent in products such as polymers, adhesives and paints.

Application

Dichloromethane is used as
  • A solvent to prepare mobile phase in Liquid chromatography.
  • Extraction solvent in the decaffeination of coffee and as a paint stripper.
  • Solvent lipid extraction to determine the lipid classes and fatty acids in samples.
  • An elution solvent in flash chromatography.
