General description

Amyloid Beta 1-42 (Aβ1-42) is a peptide derived from the proteolytic cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP), a transmembrane protein implicated in neuronal development and function. Aβ1-42 is particularly notable for its propensity to aggregate into toxic oligomers and fibrils, which are key components of amyloid plaques found in the brains of individuals with neurodegenerative diseases, especially Alzheimer′s disease (AD).

Aβ1-42 plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer′s disease. Elevated levels of Aβ1-42 are associated with the development of amyloid plaques, which can disrupt neuronal function, trigger neuroinflammation, and lead to neuronal cell death. The presence of Aβ1-42 in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is often inversely correlated with cognitive decline, making it a valuable biomarker for early diagnosis and monitoring of Alzheimer′s disease.
