      Background InformationPANK2 (Pantothenate kinase 2) phosphorylates pantothenic acid (vitamin B(5) and regulates the overall rate of coenzyme A (CoA) biosynthesis. PANK2 thereby plays an important role in lipid metabolism and energy production. Mutation or knockdown of the PANK2 gene results in various disease states, including hypoglycemia, hyperketonemia, faulty metabolism, poor postnatal development, and childhood neurodegeneration.
