General description

MacConkey Contact Agar - RT is designed for the isolation of Enterobacteriaceae on dry surfaces and personnel in controlled environments.
MacConkey agar is a selective medium for the isolation and cultivation of Enterobacteriaceae, especially E. coli in pharmaceutical, food, and other samples. Enterobacteriaceae can be differentiated even in the presence of Salmonella and Shigella. The pH ranges betweeen 6.9-7.3, which is optimum for the growth of bacteria. The addition of crystal violet and bile salts to MacConkey Agar inhibits the growth of gram-positive bacteria, whereas the growth of most gram-negative bacteria is supported. Bacteria using lactose and producing acids grow in pink to red-colored colonies, and bacteria not degrading lactose will grow colorless. Additionally, E. coli and other acid-forming bacteria will show a zone of precipitated bile salt around the colonies.
