General description

Streptozocin (STZ) found to have two anomers, α and β. STZ is a methylnitrosourea that attached to a glucosamine molecule. As nitrosourea class alkylating agent it results with toxic effect to the cells and cause damage to the DNA.

Application

Streptozocin has been used -
  • As an antibiotic4 and antineoplastic agent.
  • As a toxic to insulin producing β-cells of pancreas in mammals The relative toxicity to β-cells is occurring because of the similarity of STZ to glucose, as it transported into the cells by glucose transport protein, GLUT2, which is highly expressed on β-cells.
  • For treating cancer of Islets of Langerhans and to produce animal models of type 1, diabetes.
  • To induce diabetes in rats.It is injected at 60-100mg/Kg to induce diabetes in rats model.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Mode of Action: Streptozocin is an N-nitroso-containing compound which acts as a nitric oxide donor in pancreatic islets; induces death of insulin-secreting cells, producing an animal model of diabetes.

Antimicrobial Spectrum: Active against a broad spectrum antibiotic activity and antineoplastic properties.

Features and Benefits

High quality antibiotic suitable for mulitple research applications

Preparation Note

The solution is light-sensitive and should be used immediately after thawing. Thaw at room temperature; avoid heating.
