General description

Total Lipid Extract is a chloroform:methanol extract of the respective tissue (Brain, Soybean, Heart, etc.). This extract is partitioned against deionized water, and the chloroform phase is concentrated.

Application

Yeast Extract Total has been used for reconstitution of purified cell wall synthases into proteoliposomes.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Yeast lipids have the potential to self-organize, hence serves as model membranes for understanding the lipid raft forming mechanisms.

The lipid raft concept proposes that biological membranes have the potential to form functional domains based on a selective interaction between sphingolipids and sterols. These domains seem to be involved in signal transduction and vesicular sorting of proteins and lipids.

Recent work suggests that cholesterol metabolism impacts innate immune responses against infection. However, the key enzymes or the natural products and mechanisms involved are not well elucidated. Here, we have shown that upon DNA and RNA viral infection, macrophages reduced

Cholesterol and cholesterol-derived oxysterols are critical for embryonic development, synapse formation and function, and myelination, among other biological functions. Indeed, alterations in levels of cholesterol, sterol precursors, and oxysterols result in a variety of developmental disorders, emphasizing the importance of
