Application

L-histidine has been used for the selection of transformed cells. It has also been used to study its effects on the formation of verteporfin cross-linked oligomers in cellular homogenates.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Precursor of histamine by action of histidine decarboxylase.
L-Histidine is an essential amino acid. It binds to metal ions and may aid in the transport of copper. Histidine is widely present at the active sites of enzymes. It also has a role in binding of heme groups, macromolecules and phosphate groups in the binding sites of proteins.
