1,3-propene sultone

1,3-propene sultone is commonly used as a film-forming additive in battery liquid electrolytes, at concentrations up to 3% for both lithium-ion and sodium-ion chemistries. Because prop-1-ene-1,3-sultone (PES) has a more positive reduction potential than most carbonate solvents such as propylene carbonate, PES is sacrificially reduced on the surface of the anode to form a protective and ionically conductive SEI layer. This SEI layer is particularly useful in graphite cells to inhibit the co-intercalation of carbonate into the graphite. 1,3-propene sultone or prop-1-ene-1,3-sultone, abbreviated PES, is a white solid at room temperature. PES is soluble in water, carbonates, glymes, and many of the polar solvents used in battery liquid electrolytes.
