Application

1,3-propene sultone is commonly used as a film-forming additive in battery liquid electrolytes, at concentrations up to 3% for both lithium-ion and sodium-ion chemistries. Because prop-1-ene-1,3-sultone (PES) has a more positive reduction potential than most carbonate solvents such as propylene carbonate, PES is sacrificially reduced on the surface of the anode to form a protective and ionically conductive SEI layer. This SEI layer is particularly useful in graphite cells to inhibit the co-intercalation of carbonate into the graphite. Our battery grade PES meets specifications for high purity, low moisture, and low acid content to facilitate optimal performance of your electrolyte formulation.

General description

1,3-propene sultone or prop-1-ene-1,3-sultone, abbreviated PES, is a white solid at room temperature. PES is soluble in water, carbonates, glymes, and many of the polar solvents used in battery liquid electrolytes.
