Application
Sodium hydrogencarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) may be used in the following processes:
- As an alkalizing agent for treating metabolic acidosis.
- For buffering local anesthetics (LA).
- To facilitate the oxidation of styrene and cyclohexene.
- As a medium to fabricate graphene hydrogel.
General description
Sodium hydrogencarbonate commonly known as sodium bicarbonate is a white crystalline solid or powder. A study of the crystalline structure shows that the bicarbonate ion has C2v symmetry. Ruthenium catalyzed hydrogenation of sodium bicarbonate to form sodium formate has been reported.

Blood flow through intrapulmonary arteriovenous anastomoses (IPAVA) is increased by acute hypoxia during rest by unknown mechanisms. Oral administration of acetazolamide blunts the pulmonary vascular pressure response to acute hypoxia, thus permitting the observation of IPAVA blood flow with minimal
