General description

Gamma-1-Tubulin, also known as Gamma-tubulin complex component 1, GCP-1 or Tubulin gamma-1 chain, and encoded by the gene TUBG1/TUBG, is a form of tubulin protein and a component of microtubules. Tubulin is the major constituent of microtubules. The gamma chain is found at microtubule organizing centers (MTOC) such as the spindle poles or the centrosome and plays a major role in the organization of the microtubule cytoskeleton. Gamma-1-Tubulin is part of the pericentriolar matrix component that regulates alpha/beta chain minus-end nucleation, and it is also involved in centrosome duplication and spindle formation. Interestingly, gamma tubulin is often up regulated but improperly compartmentalized in many cancer cells including non-small cell lung cancer. Mutations in Gamma-1-Tubulin gene are associated with developmental cortical defects including microcephaly and malformations of cortical development (MCD). Gamma-1-Tubulin is localized to the cytoplasm and cytoskeleton components and expressed in a variety of cell types and tissues.
~56 kDa observed. Uncharacterized band(s) may be observed in some cell lysates.

Centrosomes and cilia are microtubule-based superstructures vital for cell division, signaling, and motility. The once thought hollow lumen of their microtubule core structures was recently found to hold a rich meshwork of microtubule inner proteins (MIPs). To address the outstanding
