General description

Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic hydrocarbon commonly employed as solvents and intermediates in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and flavor and fragrance products. Due to its moderate toxicity, high polarity, solubility in water and other solvents, low vapor pressure, and pleasantly aromatic scent, benzyl alcohol has gained wide application as a solvent.

Application

Benzyl alcohol is used as a solvent:
  • In the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles from zinc acetate.
  • Etherification of glycerol.

Selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with molecular oxygen over an alumina-supported palladium catalyst was performed with high rate at about 95% selectivity in supercritical carbon dioxide. The experiments in a continuous flow fixed-bed reactor showed that the pressure
