Application
L-Carnitine inner salt has been used as a component of an assay medium for Seahorse XF mitochondrial stress assay. It has also been orally administered to tumor-bearing mice, in order to study its effect on the regulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor and thereby to analyse liver inflammatory response.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Carnitine biosynthesized from lysine. Carnitine facilitates fatty acid transport into the mitochondrial compartment. In skeletal and cardiac muscle tissue it acts as a metabolic cofactor. Carnitine might be associated with the energy production from branched chain amino acids.
Carnitine is a quaternary amine that occurs naturally in most mammalian tissue. It is present in relatively high concentrations in skeletal muscle and heart where it is involved in regulating energy metabolism. It shifts glucose metabolism from glycolysis to glycogen storage and enhances the transport of long chain fatty acids into the mitochondria where they are oxidized for energy production.

Obesity and dyslipidaemia are metabolic defects resulting from impaired lipid metabolism. These impairments are associated with the development of cardiovascular disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Correcting the defects in lipid metabolism may attenuate obesity and dyslipidaemia, and reduce cardiovascular

Carnitine plays an indispensable role in fatty acid oxidation. Previous studies revealed that fetal carnitine is derived from the mother via transplacental transfer. Recent studies demonstrated the presence and importance of an active fatty acid oxidation system in the human
