General description

Amyloid Beta 1-40 (Aβ1-40) is a peptide that arises from the proteolytic cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP), a transmembrane protein thought to be involved in neuronal development and function. Aβ1-40 is one of the most common isoforms generated from APP, alongside Aβ1-42, which is more toxic and associated with the formation of amyloid plaques in neurodegenerative diseases.
Aβ1-40 plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer′s disease. Elevated levels of Aβ1-40 in the brain can contribute to neuroinflammation and neuronal damage, disrupting cell signaling and promoting the formation of amyloid plaques. These plaques are characteristic of AD and are believed to trigger a cascade of neurodegenerative processes, leading to cognitive decline and other symptoms associated with the disease. Understanding the function and implications of Aβ1-40 is essential for developing effective diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies aimed at mitigating its harmful effects in neurodegenerative conditions.
