General description

Tryptone/Tryptophan Broth is a selective culture medium used to detect indole production by microorganisms. It contains tryptone as a source of nitrogen, DL-tryptophan as the substrate for indole formation, and sodium chloride to maintain osmotic balance. After incubation, indole production is detected by adding Kovacs’ indole reagent. The formation of a red ring in the upper layer indicates a positive reaction and supports the confirmation and identification of bacterial isolates.

Application

Tryptophan Broth is used for the confirmation and identification of microorganisms isolated from food, animal feed, water, and other materials. It is applied in microbiological testing workflows for organisms such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella, and other bacteria where indole production is an important identification characteristic.
